Thursday 14th April – bike **** – Orwell Country Park near Ipswich – sunny periods.

The light wind, mild days with sunny periods continue, so once again its exercises in the back garden, my heel is still playing up not helped by a splinter, I think a return to the Doctors is the next steep as walking is a bit of a struggle at the moment:( Mag took our son and partners cat to the vet and did a little shopping at Lidl before I made a picnic before driving over to Orwell Country Park on the out skirts of Ipswich to check out the bluebell woods before the Easter weekend which is likely going to be busy, time to hide away for a few days as cant stand crowds! We were held up for a short while on the A 14 because of a broken-down lorry but were soon parking at the park which was surprisingly quiet:) It’s a short walk to the start of the path through the bluebell route which we usually have all to ourselves as everyone walks the other way! We were probably a week too early for a really good display but there was a covering of blue along with loads of trees blown over by high wind over the last couple of months. It is a beautiful walk through the woods, spotting a couple of deer and a squirrel. We reach the River Orwell which looks a picture with light airs and find a spot for our picnic lunch opposite Harkstead tower:) We are entertained by several small flocks of geese heading towards Ipswich. After enjoying the great views we continue but instead of taking our usual route under the bridge we turn right around a paddock with a large brown horse leading to an idyllic old house set in the shady glade with a variety of animals including ducks, geese, pigs and sheep, the only thing spoiling the scene was the very noisy A 14 which is close by:( We see some amazing flowers including something call spring beauty which have not seen before as well as bluebells, nettles, celandine, violets, dandy lions, shirt buttons with the best being a half dead oak which was still shooting green leaves! Then instead of taking he path near the busy A 14 we turn left up into the woods and get a bit lost ending up in some boggy bits where I lose my sandal! We end up in the new house at Ravensbrook but find our way to the wind sculpture on the hill by which time my heel was very painful but we were nearly back to the van now.
